REI’s origin story began with 23 hiking friends, who, in an attempt to obtain better equipment for a reasonable price, created a membership program allowing other adventurers to share repurposed equipment. Today, every new member makes a difference, as each membership includes a donation to The REI Cooperative Action Fund, which makes grants to nonprofits who promote justice, equity, and belonging in the outdoors. Selling everything from hiking boots and camping gear, to mountain bikes and winter coats, REI's extensive collection features top brands like Patagonia, Smartwool, Yeti, Stanley, Danner, and more.

Today, the REI community has 20 million lifetime members, nearly 15,000 employees, and 168 locations in 39 states and the District of Columbia.
